Starling Marte NYM RF
Mets' Starling Marte: Making debut in winter ball
12h agoMarte (groin) is making his Dominican Winter League debut Wednesday with Leones del Escogido, Michael Mayer of MetsmerizedOnline.com reports.
Marte has been practicing with the club and is now in its lineup for the first time, batting second and playing right field. It will be the 35-year-old's first game action since Aug. 5, as his season ended prematurely due to a nagging right groin injury. Marte was considered healthy heading into the offseason, but playing some winter ball should provide him and the Mets with some peace of mind heading into spring training, assuming he has no setbacks. He was limited to only 86 games in 2023, producing a career-low .625 OPS.

Reds' Justin Bruihl: Gets NRI from Reds
14h agoBruihl signed a minor-league contract with the Reds on Wednesday that includes an invitation to spring training.
Bruihl held a 5.46 ERA over 27 relief appearances between the Dodgers and Rockies in 2023 and has posted a 4.22 ERA and 46:24 K:BB across 70.1 frames over parts of three major-league seasons. The 26-year-old lefty will try to win a bullpen job with Cincinnati but is likely to begin 2024 at Triple-A Louisville.

Red Sox's Mauricio Llovera: Exits 40-man roster
15h agoLlovera was designated for assignment by the Red Sox on Wednesday.
A 40-man roster move was needed in order to add Lucas Giolito, and Llovera is the casualty. Llovera, 27, collected a 5.46 ERA over 25 appearances with the Red Sox in 2023 and holds a career 5.80 mark across 54 outings at the major-league level spanning parts of four seasons.

Brewers' Bryan Hudson: Acquired by Milwaukee
16h agoThe Brewers acquired Hudson from the Dodgers on Wednesday in exchange for Justin Chambers and a player to be named later or cash considerations, Eric Stephen of SBNation.com reports.
Hudson had been designated for assignment a week ago and is now headed to the National League Central. The big left-hander struggled in a cup of coffee with Los Angeles in 2023 but held a 2.43 ERA and 86:26 K:BB across 55.2 relief innings at Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Mets' Ronny Mauricio: Undergoes ACL surgery
19h agoMauricio underwent surgery Tuesday to repair a torn ACL in his right knee.
Mauricio suffered the injury last month while playing in the Dominican Winter League. Per the Mets, a typical timeline for a return to game action from this procedure is 8-to-12 months, which would indicate the young infielder could be out until September even in a best-case scenario. Mauricio had been slated to compete for the third base job with the Mets, but the bulk of those duties now figure to fall to Brett Baty.

Diamondbacks' Tucker Barnhart: Gets NRI deal from Arizona

Barnhart slashed .202/.285/.257 with nine RBI across 123 plate appearances with the Cubs last season before being DFA'd and finishing the year with the Dodgers' Triple-A affiliate. Reds' Austin Wynns: Loses 40-man roster spot
2d agoWynns was designated for assignment by the Reds on Tuesday.
Cincinnati needed to clear a spot on its 40-man roster for the addition of Frankie Montas. Wynns was just signed to a one-year, $950,000 contract last month and the Reds are betting he'll clear waivers, at which point he would presumably head to spring training as a non-roster invitee.

Orioles' Michael Perez: Signs MiLB deal with O's
5d agoPerez signed a minor-league contract with the Orioles on Saturday, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports.
Perez appeared in three games last season for the Mets, going 4-for-8 while coming across to score once. Perez will offer organizational depth at Triple-A Norfolk after slashing .204/.309/.352 with 27 RBI in the minors in 2023.

White Sox's Carlos Perez: Designated for assignment
5d agoThe White Sox designated Perez for assignment Saturday.
Perez's odds of making Chicago's Opening Day roster were already low following the addition of Martin Maldonado, and he'll officially be pushed off the 40-man to clear a spot for Chris Flexen. Perez should serve as organizational depth at Triple-A Charlotte, where he slashed .240/.295/.408 with 34 RBI across 312 plate appearances last season.

Andrew Knapp TEX C
Rangers' Andrew Knapp: Invited to Rangers' camp
8d agoKnapp signed a minor-league contract with the Rangers on Wednesday that includes an invitation to spring training.
Knapp spent all of the 2023 season at the Triple-A level between the Tigers and Astros organizations, posting a .705 OPS with nine homers. He's slashed .209/.310/.313 over parts of six seasons in the majors and will compete for the right to back up Jonah Heim at catcher.

White Sox's Martin Maldonado: Inks deal with White Sox
8d agoMaldonado signed a one-year contract with the White Sox on Tuesday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
Per Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, the deal is for $4 million and also includes a $4 million vesting option for 2025. With the White Sox searching for a solution behind the plate, they will bring in Maldonado to reunite with Korey Lee in Chicago's catcher room. The 37-year-old Maldonado will likely still have the upper hand over Lee in the battle for playing time, but after slashing .183/.260/.333 across the past three seasons, Maldonado's days as a viable fantasy option are seemingly over.

Alfonso Rivas LAA 1B
Angels' Alfonso Rivas: Claimed by Halos
13d agoThe Angels claimed Rivas off waivers from Cleveland on Friday.
Rivas will switch teams for the second time this winter after being claimed and later DFA'd by the Guardians earlier in the offseason. The 27-year-old Rivas will compete with Nolan Schanuel for reps at first base during spring training after slashing .229/.303/.422 with 15 RBI across 123 plate appearances last season.

Alfonso Rivas PIT 1B
Guardians' Alfonso Rivas: DFA'd by Cleveland
20d agoThe Guardians designated Rivas for assignment Friday.
Rivas was pushed off the 40-man roster in order to clear room for Austin Hedges, who officially signed with the Guardians on Friday. Rivas slashed .229/.303/.422 across 123 plate appearances with the Pirates and Padres last season, and he could potentially attract interest on the waiver wire from teams looking for depth at first base.

Pirates' Rowdy Tellez: Lands with Pittsburgh
22d agoTellez signed a one-year, $3.2 million contract with the Pirates on Tuesday, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports.
Tellez spent over two seasons with the Brewers, and he will remain in the NL Central to fill the Pirates' opening at first base. The 28-year-old slugger took a major step back in 2023, slashing .215/.291/.376 with 13 home runs -- only one of which came after May 23. Despite his recent struggles, Tellez should begin the season as Pittsburgh's primary first baseman, though he will likely step out of the lineup against lefties in favor of Jared Triolo or Connor Joe.

Reds' Jeimer Candelario: Deal with Cincinnati announced
24d agoThe Reds signed Candelario on Monday to a three-year, $45 million contract that contains a club option for 2027, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.
Candelario and the Reds agreed in principle on the deal last week, but it wasn't until Monday that the team formally announced the signing of the 30-year-old. He's expected to move between the corner-infield spots and designated hitter in 2024, with his ability to hit from either side of the plate likely guaranteeing him steady playing time versus both left- and right-handed pitching. After posting a career-worst .633 OPS in his final season with the Tigers in 2022, Candelario bounced back nicely at the plate in 2023, slashing .251/.336/.471 with a career-high 22 home runs and eight stolen bases across 575 plate appearances between the Nationals and Cubs.

Evan White SEA 1B
Angels' Evan White: Flipped to Halos
26d agoThe Angels acquired White (hip) and Tyler Thomas from Atlanta on Friday in exchange for Max Stassi (hip/personal) and David Fletcher, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
This is basically a swap of bad contracts, with White's maybe being the worst of them all. He hasn't appeared in a major-league game since 2021 and holds a career .544 OPS in 306 plate appearances at baseball's highest level. On top of that, he is currently in recovery mode from May hip surgery. The 27-year-old former top prospect is due $15 million guaranteed between 2024-25 and carries a total of $4 million in buyouts on his club options for 2026, 2027 and 2028.

Braves' Evan White: Pushed off 40-man roster
28d agoAtlanta outrighted White (hip) to Triple-A Gwinnett on Thursday.
White was just acquired from the Mariners on Sunday as part of the Jarred Kelenic trade, but the 27-year-old former top prospect has already lost his 40-man roster spot. White is a career .165/.235/.308 hitter in 306 major-league plate appearances and missed the majority of the 2023 season following May hip surgery.

Mets' Ronny Mauricio: Surgery imminent
3d agoMauricio is slated to undergo surgery to repair a torn right ACL shortly after New Year's Day, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports.
Mauricio suffered the injury Dec. 10 while playing winter ball in the Dominican Republic. The Mets have not revealed a potential timetable for the young infielder's return to action, but it seems likely that he'll be out until sometime after the All-Star break. With Mauricio sidelined, Brett Baty is the favorite to see the lion's share of starts at third base for the Mets.

Nate Mondou CHW 2B
Padres' Nate Mondou: Signs with Padres
19d agoMondou signed a minor-league contract with San Diego on Dec. 8.
Mondou spent most of last season with the White Sox's Triple-A affiliate and slashed .270/.379/.434 with 13 home runs and 61 RBI. The 28-year-old infielder made his major-league debut with the A's in 2022, appearing in just one game before being sent back to the minors, and he figures to continue operating in an organizational depth role in 2024.

Mets' Ronny Mauricio: Diagnosed with torn ACL
23d agoMauricio has been diagnosed with a torn ACL in his knee and will require surgery, Andy Martino of SNY.tv reports.
Mauricio suffered the injury on Sunday during Dominican Winter League play while running the bases. A timetable for the youngster's return is not yet clear but should be available following the operation. At the very least, he is certainly not going to be ready in time for Opening Day. Mauricio had been set to compete with Brett Baty for the Mets' third base job, which means Baty is now the heavy favorite to man the hot corner in the opener, with Mark Vientos also in the mix.

Mets' Ronny Mauricio: Undergoing tests for knee injury
23d agoMauricio is headed back to the United States to undergo testing for a knee injury he suffered Sunday while playing in the Dominican Winter League, Michael Mayer of MetsmerizedOnline.com reports.
Playing for Tigres del Licey, Mauricio was hurt when he stopped abruptly in between first and second base as he halted a stolen-base attempt. He first underwent testing in the Dominican Republic -- the results of which are unclear -- and will now travel to New York to be looked at by Mets doctors. If healthy, Mauricio is slated to compete in spring training for the Mets' third-base job.

Rylan Bannon HOU 2B
Mets' Rylan Bannon: Latches on with Mets
24d agoBannon signed a minor-league contract with the Mets on Monday that includes an invitation to spring training.
Bannon has seen brief action in the majors for three different teams over the last two seasons, going 2-for-20 at the plate. The 27-year-old spent virtually all of 2023 at Triple-A Sugar Land in the Astros organization, posting an .810 OPS with 18 homers and 12 steals over 95 games. Bannon plays second and third base and can handle shortstop in a pinch.

Manny Machado SD 3B
Padres' Manny Machado: Could be limited to DH initially
3d agoMachado (elbow) might not be ready to play defense Opening Day, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports.
Machado underwent surgery in early October to repair the extensor tendon in his right elbow. It's an injury he dealt with for much of the 2023 campaign and one which kept him from playing the field in September. The designated hitter duty for Machado could potentially carry over into 2024, with Ha-Seong Kim sliding over to third base.

Jonathan Arauz NYM 3B
Dodgers' Jonathan Arauz: Receives minors deal from Dodgers
9d agoArauz signed a minor-league contract with the Dodgers on Dec. 15.
Arauz is a career .184/.253/.308 hitter in 95 games at the major-league level, most recently going 8-for-59 (.136) over 27 games with the Mets in 2023. The 25-year-old will give the Dodgers some utility infielder depth.

Nick Senzel CIN 3B
Nationals' Nick Senzel: Will be everyday third baseman
21d agoSenzel is expected to serve as the Nationals' everyday third baseman in 2024, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.
Senzel bounced around all over the diamond in his last few seasons with the Reds, but third base is his natural position and it sounds like Washington plans to keep him there. Hopefully, sticking to one position will give Senzel a better chance of staying healthy, as injuries have been an ongoing issue for the 28-year-old. Senzel had massive splits in 2023, putting up a 1.008 OPS versus lefties and just a .497 OPS against righties. He'll have to greatly improve the latter number if he wants to keep an everyday job.
-
Nick Senzel CIN 3B
Nationals' Nick Senzel: Signs on with Nationals
28d agoSenzel signed a one-year, $2 million contract with the Nationals on Wednesday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
He'll have the opportunity to earn an additional $1 million in incentives and will still be under team control in 2025. Senzel was non-tendered by the Reds last month after they decided they were unwilling to pay him a raise in arbitration. The former top prospect hasn't had even a .700 OPS since his rookie season and has dealt with numerous injuries. However, Senzel should at least have a short-side platoon role after slashing .348/.389/.619 against left-handers in 2023.

Yankees' DJ LeMahieu: Slated to play third base
29d agoYankees manager Aaron Boone said Wednesday that LeMahieu will be the club's starting third baseman in 2024, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports.
LeMahieu has bounced around all over the infield during his time with the Yankees, but it sounds like the club would like to have him focus mostly on third base next season. What that means for Oswald Peraza isn't clear, as the rest of the Yanks' infield spots already appear spoken for.

Walls underwent surgery in late October to repair a labral tear in his right hip and relieve discomfort caused by an impingement, but he has progressed well in the early stages of his rehab program and could resume workouts sometime in February. The 27-year-old racked up 22 stolen bases over 99 games in 2023, though he finished with a rough .201/.305/.333 overall slash line.

Rays' Wander Franco: Detained in Dominican Republic
3d agoFranco was arrested by authorities in the Dominican Republic on Monday, Enrique Rojas and Juan Arturo Recio of ESPN.com report.
The arrest is due to the fact that Franco failed to appear at a summons last week. Franco appeared voluntarily Monday with his new lawyers as he was questioned regarding allegedly having had a relationship with a minor. The 22-year-old will be presented before a judge within 48 hours of his arrest and in the meantime will remain in the custody of the Puerto Plata Prosecutor's Office. In addition to being investigated by police in the Dominican Republic, Franco is also being investigated by Major League Baseball.

He no-showed after a summons last week, but evidently that was because Franco had fired his former lawyers and they were unable to present the summons to the shortstop. Franco has since hired new representation and they were present at Monday's meeting. The 22-year-old is being investigated by police in the Dominican Republic and Major League Baseball for alleged inappropriate relationships with minors.

Red Sox's Vaughn Grissom: Viewed as everyday second baseman
4d agoRed Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow said Saturday that the team views Grissom as its everyday second baseman, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
Grissom is also capable of playing shortstop and third base and was used some in left field during winter ball this offseason. However, the Red Sox have a clear opening at the keystone, which is where they plan to use the youngster after acquiring him from Atlanta. With Grissom around, Enmanuel Valdez now appears pegged for a reserve role or perhaps a trip back to Triple-A Worcester.

Red Sox's Vaughn Grissom: Dealt to Boston
5d agoAtlanta traded Grissom to the Red Sox on Saturday in exchange for Chris Sale and cash considerations, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
Grissom has shown plenty of upside at the plate to begin his MLB career, slashing .287/.339/.407 with five homers and 27 RBI across 236 plate appearances. However, defensive struggles and a myriad of talent on Atlanta's roster kept Grissom from seeing consistent playing time. Now in Boston, the 22-year-old infielder will have a clearer path to regular at-bats, though he may receive competition from Enmanuel Valdez.

Rays' Wander Franco: No-shows after summons
6d agoFranco failed to respond to a summons filed in the Dominican Republic to address allegations that he had inappropriate relationships with minors, Juan Arturo Recio of ESPN.com reports.
Franco had been summoned by the Specialized Prosecutor's Office for Children and Adolescents for questioning Thursday morning. At least two people have filed legal action against the Rays shortstop and, according to Recio, Franco is also under investigation for an alleged third relationship with a minor. Additionally, the Associated Press has reported that he recently fired his legal team. To this point, no criminal charges have been filed against Franco. Even if that remains the case, he is likely facing a suspension from Major League Baseball.

The summons came after authorities unsuccessfully searched for the 22-year-old at his two homes in the D.R. on Tuesday. Franco is under investigation by police and Major League Baseball for alleged inappropriate relationships with minors. He was on the restricted list from Aug. 12 through the end of the regular season before being reinstated last month in a procedural move. Whether Franco is ultimately charged criminally remains up in the air, but he is likely facing a lengthy suspension from MLB regardless.

Padres' Fernando Tatis: Staying in right field preferred
3d agoThe Padres' preference is to keep Tatis in right field next season rather than moving him to center field, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports.
San Diego hasn't ruled out shifting Tatis to center, depending on how or if it is able to address the position this offseason. The Padres would like to keep him in right, though, and that's also Tatis' preference, per Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune. Tatis was the National League's Platinum Glove winner in right field in 2023, and, given the dimensions in right at Petco Park, it's arguably as important or even more so of a position than center field in the Padres' case.

Mets' Starling Marte: Expected to play winter ball
3d agoMarte (groin) is expected to see some game action in the Dominican Winter League soon, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports.
While no firm plan for Marte's first winter ball game has been established, he's been practicing with Leones del Escogido and it sounds like playing in games is imminent. Marte's last regular-season game with the Mets came on Aug. 5, as he was ultimately shut down with a nagging right groin injury. He didn't require surgery and is now considered healthy, but the 35-year-old wanted to knock off some rust in winter ball. The Mets are hoping for a bounce-back campaign from Marte in 2024, but he'll head into the season as a major health risk.

Blue Jays' Isiah Kiner-Falefa: Lands $15 million deal from Toronto
8d agoKiner-Falefa signed a two-year, $15 million contract with the Blue Jays on Wednesday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.
He can earn an additional $1 million in incentives. Kiner-Falefa has never even posted a .700 OPS in any of his six major-league seasons, but he nonetheless seemed to have a strong market this winter. The utility player would currently appear to be in line to see ample time at second and third base for Toronto but, of course, offers the ability to bounce around to a variety of positions.

Braves' Bryce Elder: Competing for fifth spot
4d agoAtlanta general manager Alex Anthopoulos said Saturday that Elder will compete with Reynaldo Lopez and AJ Smith-Shawver for the fifth spot in the rotation, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports.
While he should probably be considered the favorite to land the fifth starter job, Elder no longer appears guaranteed a rotation spot following Atlanta's acquisition of Chris Sale. The 24-year-old collected a 2.97 ERA in 18 first-half starts in 2023 but stumbled to a 5.11 ERA in 13 outings after the All-Star break. A 49.9 percent groundball rate helps, but Elder's 17.5 percent strikeout rate leaves a lot to be desired.

Sale put up a 4.30 ERA and 1.13 WHIP over 102.2 frames last season with Boston and missed two months with a shoulder injury, but he finished the year strong, allowing eight earned runs over 25 innings across five starts in September.

Chicago's rotation projects to rank near the bottom of the AL again this year, so Flexen should have a fairly clear path to securing a starting job in 2024.

Red Sox's Lucas Giolito: Headed to Boston
5d agoGiolito signed a two-year, $38.5 million contract with the Red Sox on Friday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
Giolito bounced around between the White Sox, Angels and Guardians last season, logging a 4.88 ERA and 1.31 WHIP across 184.1 total innings. The 29-year-old righty is capable of racking up strikeouts at an impressive rate -- he's surpassed 200 punchouts twice in the last three seasons. However, Giolito's ERA approached 5.00 in both 2022 and 2023, which makes him a risky fantasy option heading into next year.

Castillo has collected a career 5.43 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 47:24 K:BB in 59.2 innings over parts of two seasons in the majors, making six starts and 15 relief appearances over that span. It's not clear which role the Red Sox have planned for him. The 24-year-old does have an option year remaining, so Boston could stash him at Triple-A Worcester if Castillo doesn't earn an Opening Day roster spot.

Padres' Robert Suarez: Projected to serve as closer
2d agoSuarez is the Padres' projected closer even after the team's addition of Yuki Matsui, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports.
Matsui was recently inked to a five-year, $28 million contract and is expected to handle high-leverage innings, but Lin still views Suarez as the club's likely closer. Suarez -- who signed a five-year, $46 million deal last offseason to remain with the Padres -- was limited to just 26 appearances in 2023 while battling elbow issues, posting a 4.23 ERA and 24:10 K:BB across 27.2 innings. The 32-year-old ended the season healthy, though, and his 97.7 mph average four-seamer velocity was right in line with what he showed during his stellar 2022 campaign. Whether new manager Mike Shildt plans to name a closer isn't clear, but it would appear Suarez could have the early leg up.

Frankie Montas NYY RP
Reds' Frankie Montas: Signs with Cincinnati
5d agoMontas signed a one-year, $16 million contract with the Reds on Saturday, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports.
Montas missed nearly all of last season after undergoing arthroscopic surgery in February, but he was able to make it back in time for one appearance at the end of the year. The 30-year-old righty will provide depth to a Reds rotation that ranked near the bottom of the majors in 2023, but it remains to be seen how effective Montas will be post-surgery. Montas posted a 4.05 ERA and 1.25 WHIP through 144.1 innings in 2022.

Mitch Garver TEX DH
Mariners' Mitch Garver: Heads to Seattle
10d agoGarver agreed to a two-year, $24 million contract with the Mariners on Sunday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
The M's now have their primary replacement for Teoscar Hernandez in Garver, who posted an .870 OPS and 19 home runs in 87 regular-season games last season (while adding three more long balls during the Rangers' World Series run). Primarily a designated hitter at this stage in his career, Garver can also chip in occasionally behind the plate. He made 28 appearances at catcher last season.

13d agoDickerson signed with the Chunichi Dragons of the Nippon Professional Baseball on Thursday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.

Andrew McCutchen PIT DH
Pirates' Andrew McCutchen: Re-signs with Pittsburgh
16d agoPittsburgh re-signed McCutchen (Achilles) to a one-year, $5 million contract Tuesday, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
McCutchen missed the final month of the 2023 campaign due to a partial tear of his left Achilles tendon, but he posted a respectable .776 OPS with 12 homers and 11 steals over 112 games for the Pirates when healthy. The 37-year-old will likely again serve as Pittsburgh's primary designated hitter in 2024, also possibly sprinkling in a bit of action in the corner outfield if his lower left leg cooperates. McCutchen is sitting on 299 career home runs as he enters his 16th major-league season.

Matt Carpenter ATL DH
Matt Carpenter: Released by Atlanta
17d agoCarpenter was released by Atlanta on Monday, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports.
Atlanta had hoped to find a trade partner willing to take on at least some of the $4 million it owed Carpenter in 2024 (the Padres also owe him $1.5 million), but it wasn't to be. The 38-year-old slashed an ugly .176/.322/.319 during his lone season in San Diego and there's a distinct possibility we've seen the last of the three-time All-Star in the big leagues.

Matt Carpenter SD DH
Braves' Matt Carpenter: Traded to Atlanta
19d agoAtlanta acquired Carpenter (elbow), Ray Kerr and cash considerations from the Padres on Friday in exchange for Drew Campbell.
Carpenter, 38, posted a dreadful .176/.322/.319 slash line with five home runs over 76 games (237 plate appearances) for San Diego in 2023 and finished the year on the injured list because of right elbow inflammation. With no need at first base or designated hitter, Atlanta could quickly flip him to another team. He's owed $5.5 million in 2024 after exercising his final-year player option earlier this offseason, but the Padres will cover $1.5 million of that.

Shohei Ohtani LAA DH
Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani: Joining Dodgers on 10-year deal
26d agoOhtani (elbow) announced Saturday via his personal Instagram account that he will be signing with the Dodgers.
The Blue Jays were rumored to be the frontrunners for Ohtani's services, but the two-way superstar will instead swap Los Angeles teams on what his agents are announcing as a 10-year, $700 million deal, according to Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic. Ohtani underwent elbow surgery in September that will prevent him from pitching next season, but he'll settle in as a full-time designated hitter for the Dodgers and immediately becomes arguably the biggest threat in a lineup that also features Freddie Freeman and Mookie Betts.
